Oak Bay Secondary has one of the largest and most successful athletic programs in British Columbia. In large part this is the result of the active involvement of Oak Bay students in the organization and operation of the school athletics program. Students enrolled in Athletic Leadership officiate games, manage teams, act as liaisons between the Athletic Director and team coaches, update the Athletics Website reporting on team’s successes, and serve as athletic departmental assistants. In addition, students have the opportunity to achieve St. John’s Emergency First Aid certification and/or complete the National Coaching Certification Module A and Module B coaching theory courses. Students are required to complete 12 hours of service each term.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
Students will:
Learn to manage and organize their tasks
Practice placing tasks in priority order
Improve communication skills
Accept responsibility for tasks and see them through to their completion
Celebrate leadership as the everyday act of improving each other’s lives
Gain certification in Emergency First Aid
Gain certification in NCCP coaching theory
TIMETABLING
All course work for Athletic Leadership is scheduled outside of the regular school timetable, thus students must be willing to attend classes before the regular school day begins (7:30am-8:20am) or at noon hour. In some cases course requirements can be completed during the regular timetable (during a study block) or at home.
All Athletic Leadership students are required to serve as minor officials at volleyball and basketball games. Oak Bay hosts so many basketball and volleyball games that students have a great deal of flexibility in meeting this commitment.
Below is an outline of when the various courses in Athletic Leadership are offered. Students will meet with the instructor to program their courses for the 2014 / 15 school year. It is a good idea for students to prepare for the meeting in advance. During our planning, students should consider grade level restrictions, their own commitments before school and at noon hour, the seasons of play for the sports they play and personal areas of interest.

Coaching Practicum Terms 1, 2, 3 and/or 4, depending on the sports’ season of play.
Open to Grade 11-12 students who have completed their Module A coaching theory course. Students meet individually with the instructor to plan their assignment.
Opportunities to take a level I technical course will be provided.
Students are required to arrange a team to coach themselves or speak to Mr. Butler about coaching one of our school grade 8 teams.
Officiating Certification Open to grades 10-12
Officiating clinics will be organized for Volleyball (Term 1), Basketball ( Term 2 ), and Soccer (Term 3). Students will have their practical officiating experiences supervised.
